Steve's New Years Post

2012 is here and that closes the first year of Taco Graveyard! Well, not the first full year as I believe we started making our game in the spring, but the first calendar year at least.

I think everyone gets swept up in the “new start” of a new year, even though it’s technically just another day. But in the creative fields especially it’s a good time to take inventory of your projects and set new goals.

For us, 2011 was a very formative year, as well as productive. 2012 we hope to actually see the results of all that productivity. The inventory:

Our main project was a large game to start with and only grew throughout the year. We could have finished it a long time ago if we stuck to our original vision but it really took on a life of its own and grew, we think, for the better. As is, there’s still a lot of work to do here but it is our primary game and we’ve put a lot of work into it, so sometime this year expect to see it.

THE FOUR HATS came out of the Ludum Dare project - a small game me made up on the spot in a weekend, and that we had so much fun with we’re expanding it into a full game. The goal is to keep it simple, keep all the fun of the original one level game, DON’T let it spiral out of control. We want to be done by the end of this month. Working on THE FOUR HATS has really helped us relook at elements of our primary game that have become possibly too bloated. We look forward to revising the game design a bit on that game and maybe that’ll help us get it out faster, too.

So that’s two games. We have a total of 7 in various stages right now. We don’t want to get too overwhelmed that we don’t complete anything, so most are on the backburner, but there’s a few smaller games that we could put out if our primary game takes too much time. 

Ideally? We’d put them all out this year! Realistically, who knows. But a firm goal is to have FOUR HATS in the app store within a month or so, and then to tackle the primary game full force immediately after. If we can be done with those by mid-year, that gives us a lot of time. I think four games is certainly doable, but it’s best not to set things in stone.
